About Sigrid Ehemann
Sigrid Ehemann is a photo- and text-based maker of sculptures and installations, who lives and works in Germany. During the final years of a long career teaching young adults and designing and managing art projects as experimental learning environments, she started showing her photography online under an alias. This turned out to be the first step towards reinventing herself. Soon she began craving more feedback. and this, in turn, led to setting up her first solo exhibition in her own apartment. To hone her craft, she has been a participant in portfolio reviews and workshops on fine art photography and photobooks in Salzburg, Cologne, Düsseldorf, Arles, and Istanbul, led by Katharina Sieverding amongst others. She has taken part in a masterclass in Tokyo led by German artist duo Katja Stuke and Oliver Sieber aka Boehm Kobayashi.
During quite a few years her photographs and photobooks have travelled to international festivals such as the KOLGA Photo Festival in Tbilisi, Georgia, the Photobook Festival in Istanbul, Turkey, the Athens Photo Festival, Greece, and many more. Her self-published photobooks have been shortlisted for Best Photobook Dummy Award at the prestigious Kassel PhotoBook Festival in Germany, and for the Premio Internacional at the Festival de Libros de Fotografía y Afines, Buenos Aires, Argentina. They are part of the archives of L'Ecole Nationale de la Photographie, Arles, France, The Photobookshow, Brighton, UK, the Athens Photo Festival, Athens, Greece, the Istanbul Photobook Festival, Istanbul, Turkey, PHOTOIRELAND, The Library Project, Dublin, Ireland, Printed Matter, New York City, New York, and Felifa, Buenos Aires, Argentina. One of her latest books, Bruno Is a Celebrity, has been reviewed for a Photo Editor and GUP Magazine. In spring 2018, Pussy Magazine #1, #2, #3, a spoof fashion magazine offering "Style tips for the invisible woman", came out and has been reviewed favourably as well.
Always busy with several projects at the same time, she is currently thinking about re-thinking Bruno, the Celebrity President, her personal take on the terrible thought-to-be-past success story in the White House that kept so many of us intrigued during four long years after Obama; on Fashion Porn for Real Contemporaries, a new variety of her Portraits in Pink, with an emphasis on how fashion, gender politics and questions of self and identity are interlinked and can be treated in her preferred mode of surreal comedy, and last but not least on the bliss of sakura in black and white, a comprehensive and ongoing multimedia work on the subject of cherry blossom viewing in Japan, which grew out of her love of immersing herself in the modern city.
She has degrees in English, American and French language and literature from the University of Bonn, Germany, and her love of language and text is often reflected in her art. As of today, apart from her own art making in the shape of images, texts and books, her range of activities include organising and curating exhibitions for friends and colleagues at a renowned artists' association as well - and, since she likes challenges of all sorts, she has also started to immerse herself in a course that will hopefully reward her with a degree in the fine arts, too.
