The photographs in this, my first book - my white book - were taken during a three-week stay at the International Academy of Fine Arts at Salzburg in the summer of 2011. I was a student in Christoph Schäfer's class "Drawing as Wish-Machine". He was a very generous, inspiring teacher and, when it became apparent that my appetite for drawing was somewhat diminished, he said that he would like to see me photograph the city in ways not seen before. The images in this book reflect the view of the photographer as alien, slowly adapting to the city unknown and uncovering the layered traces of human actions, the signs of wind and weather, climate and time. Italo Calvino's stunning and revolutionary book entitled Le città invisibili, part fiction, part non-fiction, which I couldn't stop reading, provided much of the framework. The concept of the book's design derives from the intent to embed the photographic material in the whiteness of the page, thus creating precious miniatures despite the everyday quality, even banality of many of the sights.
